ZAP Wing

The Rhino need to be protected. The parks need to be patrolled, borders need to be monitored from dusk until dawn as this is the time that poachers come into and leave the park. Once an incident takes place there needs to be a quick and effective way to track the poachers and the crime scene needs to be preserved. Apprehension and prosecution is essential in the fight against poaching. Poachers don't just appear on a property and blindly look for rhino. They typically work with locals who direct them to where the rhino are. Information spreads quickly among Zulu and can be monitored with the right informant network.

ZAP Wing (Zululand Anti Poaching Wing) is the key effort of 'Project Rhino'. This is the glue that binds all the fragmented parties involved with the rhino in Zululand together. It provides aerial surveillance of the land on which the rhino roam. It utilises a combination of fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. The fixed wing cheetah patrols the many hundreds of kilometres of fence lines, follows up signs like vultures that might indicate dead animals. It is also used for game counting and is a general deterrent at dawn and dusk when poachers are most likely to be breaching the fence lines. The helicopter is used to quickly respond to a poaching incident or to support an ambush. Imake a Difference pays for the hours the helicopter is utilised on rhino protection. Imake a Difference pays Ettiene - one of the pilot's salary to ensure we have enough aircraft monitoring at the reserves.
